The Skunk Whisperer Update:

I just received this note from David (Addy's Texas Grandpa) our animal lover super hero!,

Thought you'd get a laugh out of this:

After I saw the skunk in the trap, and not knowing what to do, I called the local pest control company, Assassins Pest Control. Can I just say this is a horrible horrible but honest name for a pest control.

They said it would be impossible to get it out without getting sprayed.

They would charge $250 to come and get it out, but they couldn't get to it for a while.

I said I would try my best to do it myself.

They said "Good luck, but you'll get sprayed! We'll call you tomorrow and see how you did."

Sure enough, they called back today.

I told them of my good fortune, and sent them a photo of the precious little bundle. The skunk obviously knew that David wasn't going to hurt him ;)

They could not believe it! They all agreed to call me The Skunk Whisperer of Llano County and wanted to know if they could refer future business to me!

All in good fun!

But I like the moniker!

I hope they do call him. He can start saving skunks all across Texas :)

Addy's Grandpa Andrews in Texas sent us this email.  WOW. WOW. WOW. What an amazing story with a happy happy ending!!!

We heard some scratching above the ceiling in the guest bedroom
downstairs, so I cut a hole in the ceiling and set a live trap
expecting to catch a racoon or a rock squirrel.
 
To my surprise, I caught a skunk!!!  It was quite a challenge figuring
out how to get him out of the attic and house without spraying, but I
was successful.  I took him way away from here and let him go.
 
It was an Eastern Spotted Skunk - I had never seen that species
before.  Beautiful!!
 
Actually, it was not in the attic, but was in the space between the
ceiling of the lower floor and the floor of the upper floor.  The
space is about 12-14" deep.

Addyson and Daron and I were eating dinner the other night and I noticed a bruise on the right side of her cheek back by her ear. I told Daron to look at it and he said she has the same thing on this side. We said how in the world could she get bruises on both sides of her head? Addy looked at us and said "I stuck my head in there." We both looked at the stair railings and started laughing.

Auntie Karen keeps Addy in fashionable clothes! Auntie Karen went a little crazy this month. She hit Koh'ls not once but twice and we received two boxes in a row. Addy loves the cupcake purse that lights up when you bump it or set it down. She also loves the coaster with bling. She chose the red and silver ensemble and I must say she looked tall and thin and much older than 31/2.

Addy loves dressing up and added the glitter sweater too.

Daron had to work in L.A. a few weekends ago. He took a day during the following week off. He chose the one day that it snowed. Every other day is in the 60's and sunny. He built a cattery which is awesome because we want the kitty litter outside.

New kitchen island is in the works.

Being a full time mom is great but it can be hard because your "boss" is learning how to control her emotions. I guess it is similar to the boss I had years ago that was going through menopause... She also doesn't give 15 minute breaks or comp time and when I tell her I am tired she tells me I am not. It is however the best job in the world and has a pretty good benefits package. This includes hugs, I love you's, pictures and paintings, cuddles, and to die for smiles.

Recently, my "boss" Addyson will tell me she wants a sandwich and I ask her if I should make it or should she? "Youuuuu make it" she whines, I start getting out the peanut butter and bread. All of a sudden Addyson is crying and screaming "No Iwanna *mumble* Nooooooo" The first few times this happened I though maybe she severed her arm or something but no she wanted to make the sandwich. I tell her "Addyson calm down here you can make it."
"I wanted to get the stuff out, *sniffle sniffle." she replies.
Now we are at a standstill. The stuffs out already. If I put it back she say no and if I say well make the sandwich she says no. Remember I am not allowed to make the sandwich at this point.

One of the funniest but not so funny at the time was when we were in the grocery store. She had almost fallen asleep on the way there which is always a set up for a breakdown. Anyhow, we rushed through the store and I asked her if she wanted string cheese. "No" she replied. Ok, I know better than to take no for an answer. I should have just put some string cheese in the cart anyway. That could have caused a breakdown though... Anyhow, we get to the checkout line and she cries "I want cream cheese!" I say "You want cream cheese/" She says "NOOO swing cheese." I say "Oh string cheese - hold on" It is a small town and I know the checkout girls. I run down the isle to the back of the store and grab string cheese. Addy is sitting in the cart by the way. On the way back I hear Addy crying and Cassie saying "your mom will be right back".
I give Addy the string cheese.
"NOOOOOOOO, I WANTED TO GET THE STRING CHEESE MYSELF!"
Really? Really? Now we are going to go there?
So I pay and ignore her and laugh a little because she is outta control crazy. I hear patrons behind me saying "Oh, poor thing." At this point I don't know if they are feeling sorry for me or Addy or both.
We go on the merry go round and she is still saying "I wanted to get the cheese."
"I know Addy I am sorry" I say.
"I wanted to get the cheese." she says
"I know Addy I am sorry" I say.
"I wanted to get the cheese." she says
"Oh my God let it go child. ENOUGH with the stupid cheese" Ok, I didn't say that but I thought it in my head which made me laugh a little (that of course pissed her off even more.
We walked to the store. It took about 15 minutes. Therefore, we had to walk back.

By now I am thinking she is NEVER going to let this go. Maybe I could take her to a friends house, drop her off...

Better yet, I take her to the park. She has a good time and we get back in the baby jogger. A block from the house she says "I wanted to get the cheese."

So the past two weeks have been interesting. As many of you know I am only working 7 hours a week in the humane education dept. at Best Friends. I wanted to keep my foot in the door so to speak without taking me away from my full time mommy role. Well the Humane Education dept. is officially no longer. So now I am truly a full time mommy! I am sad to see our programs, outreach and communication with the kids, schools and families go but I am sure it will all be ok. Daron is still working for Best Friends and just returned from L.A. He was getting their new offices/shelter/spay neuter clinic set up. He couldn't believe all of the great dogs that were saved from death row. Lots of little dogs and pit bulls. I am so happy that he was able to walk some of the dogs and see how his participation really does save lives.

Since the weather has been more like spring than winter my friend Kim and I took Addy to Zion and Springdale for lunch. It was nice to get a change of scenery and just enjoy the surroundings.

I have been trying not to give Addy too much sugar. She had some in Springdale and totally acted crazy!

Up for a good laugh? Here are some Addy quotes. Addy: "I am the boss and you are the bosses helper." Mom: "Ya that seems to be right." While sitting in the car watching squirrels and birds. Mom: "How do squirrels remember where they buried their nuts?" Addy: "Because they have a sense of direction." Addy: "Mommy are you singing that song because of how beautiful I am" Addy: "Do you wish you were as beautiful as me *adorable smile*" At least she doesn't have self esteem issues. Mom: "I am so tired." Addy: "NO YOUR NOT!" Mom: "uh, ok." Addy: "Do this Mom." (somersault) Mom: "I am too old to do that." (never thought I would utter those words.) Addy: "Are you old and moldy?"

And the BEST ONE to date was when Addy was in the bathroom going potty and Daron was watching a documentary on a murder. The wrongly accused guy stood up and yelled "You can all go to hell" multiple times. Daron heard Addy yell "GO TO HELL! GO TO HELL!" He never believed me when I told him she picks up on stuff ;)

I remember going swimming at the Saffells house in Battle Creek. The highlight was when Jerry would do a backflip - not off the diving board but standing right there in the grass. It was amazing. Although I doubt he is still doing backflips (although maybe he is) I did hear that he made another hold-in-1 this year and finished 3rd in the US World Amateur Golf. Although Bonnie said she is still trying to break 100 I give her credit. I am still trying to hit the ball. Seriously!

Dolphin Ready Baby!

A highlight on the trip was swimming and interacting with two dolphins in Cozumel. Eddie and Johnny awaited us and we were able to kiss them, pet them, shake "hands" with them and basically spend thirty minutes with them. It was awesome and Addy was SO brave. We swam in the ocean with them so the water was a little choppy. Fine for adults but when you are three and the water splashes into your face it is a bit annoying. She did great and she loved petting their tummies. She had to keep her legs wrapped around mom or dad because they were confusing the dolphins. There were some awesome photos of me and Daron with the dolphins but they wanted WAY too much money for them ;)

What happens when you get six family members ready for a seven day cruise?
Grandpa and Mimi Nagle treated Daron, Lisa, Addy and I to a seven day cruise to Haiti, Jamaica and Cozumel. The bus got stuck in a construction area while picking up another group of people. Addy exclaimed "This is why we don't live in Florida." Luckily, another bus was sent and we were on the bus in plenty of time!

After being spoiled by Daron's parents in November we flew down to Florida and were spoiled by my parents. We are lucky kids and Addyson is a lucky little girl! Although our travel day was long - 1.5 hour drive to St. George, fly St. George to Salt Lake, Salt Lake to Atlanta and Atlanta to West Palm. Mom had a nice turkey dinner waiting for us. Mimi and Grandpa had toys and clothes for Addy as well and Uncle Robert and Uncle Dan had left her a big stuffed dolphin. Mom saw my awful haircut and took me shopping for clothes and got my hair fixed. Every now and then you need mom to take care of you!

So it has been forever since I have last posted. We were busy moving into our new house then Daron's parents came and got the house in working order and got bids on things that need to be done and basically "whipped us in shape!" Then I went to Boston all by myself to see Karen Crumback and help her settle into her new house. Addy and I both ended up with a head cold which slowed us down a bit. I had a birthday (gulp) the big 42. I moved offices at work (I only work seven hours a week). Probably the most challenging task in the past three weeks has been giving our cat Bella an antibiotic twice a day! yikes.

Preparing for Thanksgiving right now and painting, organizing and sewing for the house. The chickens are settled in to their nice but small yard. Trying to wrangle folks into watching the dog, chickens and cats while we are on our cruise with Mimi, Papa and Aunt Sasa for a full week in December! There will be more people on the ship than live in Kanab. Wow. Addyson is so excited she can barely stand it! She told us she loves flying and traveling and her Grandma Andrews bought her a trunkie which is a kids suitcase on wheels that you can also ride on. Brillant!

When we return from the cruise we celebrate Christmas and Uncle Jason, Aunt Petra and Addy's cousins Hayden and Hayley will be visiting along with Grandma and Grandpa Andrews again! Addy said she wished Grandma and Grandpa could have just stayed from November to the end of December.

Wow what a relaxing weekend I had. Saturday I helped a friend move 30 miles away to the town of Glendale. She is renting a garage apt. on 80 acres. The owner has goats, chickens, geese, apple orchards, hiking trails and fish ponds. The leaves are starting to change and we were able to go apple picking. I haven't been apple picking since I lived in Michigan. It was so gorgeous. We ended the day at Buffalo Bistro with a draft beer and buffalo burgers.

Uncle Dan and Uncle Robert just returned from their cruise. Addy was excited to see the photo of their "ship" since all she has been talking about is the ship we will cruise on in December. The Royal Caribbean Allure!

Addy has been needing a haircut. Partly because of laziness and partly because I am avoiding a possible hair salon breakdown I decided to cut her bangs while she was taking a bath. I did it on the sly and she didn't even notice. The next day her friend Cedar's Mom Jenny asked Addy if she got her haircut. Addy said "No" of course because she didn't know that she had. Addy had watched Cedar get her haircut in the salon.

I got brave and tried to trim a bit more off the sides to shape it and she caught me. Luckily all she asked is "Mommy why did you cut my hair?" She was pleased with the response and we moved on. So the next day Jenny said "Addy did you get your haircut?" and she said "Not for real, just with the scissors." I guess since it wasn't in the salon it wasn't for real.

I have been watching the housing market closely for 5.5 years. We have lived here five years. LUCKILY, in my forty plus years I have learned to always listen to my mom. ALWAYS! So Daron and I waited. Thank goodness we didn't buy in the high time - paying 200,000 plus for a delapitated modular home for fear that if prices kept rising we would never be able to buy a house. We didn't even plan to buy a house until the last straw broke in our rental house and we decided we were tired of moving furniture every time the roof leaked etc. etc. It has been a great house though and we consider it home. It is where we lived when I was pregnant, when Addy was born, when we lost Rodeo and where we spent the first five years of our married life. We want to live in town because I like to walk everywhere and take Addy to the park, play dates and preschool via the baby jogger. Since it is a small town I am familiar with all of the houses and have a few favorite. Three of my favorites just happen to be for sale. The first is a home built in 1912 on a HUGE lot in town. Unfortunately, foundation damage and termites have knocked it out of the running. *sniff *sniff. The second is a stucco house that we actually have a contract on and the third is the house on the hill. It overlooks all of Kanab and it has awesome two story windows. All of the houses have issues since they were built in the 70's but they also have some awesome characteristics.

Addy and I visit a friends dog. Addy loved this little dog because he had lots of energy but loved to cuddle. We like cuddlers! He also had a gimpy front paw that he held up all the time. It looked like he was a three legged dog. He didn't mind a bit and it didn't slow him down.

This morning Addy and I were walking down the stairs to her preschool and she yelled "Don't start without me." This reminded me of the story my Mom told me when I was a little kid attending art class. I walked down the stairs and yelled "Hi kids!"

I couldn't sleep last night. I was so excited about Addy going to school. She was ready to "see what all the fun was about." Daron is worried that she will get hurt.

We all went to orientation today.

Daron pointed out every sharp corner at the school and it was actually surprising how many sharp edges there were! Deep breathe. Addy saw her buddy Treyson and her good friend Cedar just signed up for preschool yesterday! There happened to be a cancellation on Saturday so they had one spot available. Cedar, Treyson and Addyson were the most outgoing and talkative in the group. Hope that doesn't get her into trouble! I tried to get a few photos at the school without looking like a total dork. Hey this is a big deal especially when its your one and only heading out into the big scary world of school. I am happy to report she is WAY braver than I ever was and when I asked her what she liked best she said "The bikes in the playground."

I hosted book club last month and when I told Addy that we were having a "book party" she said "We have to have cake." She made cupcakes and not thinking I set them on the chest of drawers which is between the kitchen and guest room. Later that evening I had Zeena come inside. If you ever have wondered what would happen if you put a plate of cupcakes in front of a dog... Anyhow, we used silicone cupcake holders which thankfully she did not ingest. Addy made sure to put sprinkles on the cupcakes which you can see randomly scattered on the white comforter. My favorite is Zeena's face. She's like "What? What?"

Addy and I got on a roll for a few days of sewing little animals out of scrap material. Addy did a great job helping to stuff the little buggers.

We had stayed the night in St. George so that I could get a 90 min massage and Addy and Daron could go to the Bounce House. Sat. morning I headed to a great farmers market and stocked up on veggies. We also got Addy some new furniture for her bedroom.

She is such a hoot.

Some Days...

There is a restaurant in St. George that says something like “God created kids so parents would welcome death.” I didn’t like it all that much until today. Today was one of those days. To be fair it started the night before. Addy fell asleep in her baby jogger around 9 which is early so I was thrilled. Unfortunately she woke up whining at midnight and two and four. What the hell? She asked me to “tell me a story not a book story.” So at midnight, two and four I told her stories. At two she wanted a story about birds very specifically a mommy, a daddy and a baby bird and at four a.m. she wanted a story about horses (I think) but again was very specific that the story had a mommy horse, daddy horse and a baby horse.
Luckily we slept in but that didn’t seem to help either one of us. We were both sleepy and when her friend Cedar came over her grumpiness came out. Every question I asked or Cedar asked resulted in a high pitch response that usually was a negative to whatever we were asking. I decided to tip all the furniture over and vacuum. Since Addy hates the sound of the vacuum I figured they could play in her room while I swept. When I brought this up to Addy she adamantly said “NO!” Since I was tired and grumpy myself I said “Fine” and turned on the vacuum. She screamed and cried and said “No I don’t want you to vacuum.” Again, I was in a bad mood and wanted to accomplish something this morning so I told her to go in her room or deal with it. The bottom line is I ended up dropping the couch on my toe. I sucked back screaming bloody murder and running down a roster of bad words. I yelled something at Addy went towards my room and told Cedar as politely as I could “I just hurt my foot I need to go in my room for a little while.” Poor girl. Usually I have a very chill house but not today. No not today. Addy cried and yelled and cried and eventually I felt so sorry for Cedar that I braved the waters again.
Addy and I were going to head up to my office and I wanted to get a sandwich on the way there. Addy didn’t want to do either. I was gathering all the stuff I needed for the office while she whined about needing a blue juice or another episode of Fishtranaut. Usually if she says she doesn’t want to go I pick her up and we go anyway and she is fine. Today with my broken toe, bad mood and insane child I decided to bag the whole idea. I was irritated. I crawled into bed and she came in. I almost fell asleep three times she never batted an eye. Ugh. She kept poking me and saying play with me. On a normal day I would play with her because I am a stay at home mom and that is what I do but today the last thing I wanted to do was play make believe. I wanted to sleep in quiet bliss.
Her buddy Brax came over and they played a little. Excellent I thought. Ya right. They started asking for a drink and a snack and then Addy wanted me to play with her. Ahhh why did I invite your friend over? To play with you! I made them dinner which they didn’t eat. I finally got ½ the meal down Addy but it was a struggle. Then as I cleaned up the kitchen I realized Brax had poured juice in the kitchen drawer, Addy had left a popsicle drenched napkin in her room, Brax spit on my leg (claiming it was an accident) and Addy basically whined about every little thing. The kicker was when Brax ran to the bathroom yelling “I have to poopy” with an urgency that scared me. Later that evening when I walked into the bathroom to take a shower I picked up with my BARE HAND what I thought was a red clay rock. EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

Needless to say, I am in bed and Daron is getting Addy her cheesy cracker minus the blue juice since I told them both it was too late for that. It ensued yet another crying fit. Whatever. I am hoping that he will remember to have her brush her teeth before bed and that she will eventually GO to bed. So much for my Preschool Training Bootcamp.

That reminds me the other day I told her I was ready for her to start preschool. I felt as though I have been touting it up forever. In fact, I have been talking about it since June. She replied “Ya, I can’t wait to see what all the fun is about.” I told Daron I probably built it up too much at this point.

Why Women "Nag" and other rantings~

So this morning on the news a survey unveiled that women have trouble sleeping because they are worried about money. Not surprising since most women are the budget keepers in the family. When the men were asked what they worried about at night the answer was "nothing." I will never feel bad again when I get a migraine. Are you kidding me! NOTHING! Daron believes (and it is probably true) that when my worry level falls below a certain threshold I find something else to worry about. I wouldn't doubt it.

Back to the money issue. I know many many couples have this same issue. The men working and the women trying to budget the money they make. Just tonight I asked Daron to look at Priceline to book a hotel for one night. "Why am I doing this? I don't want to do this. This is not my job I did my job today." This is fine because budget is something of a foreign language to him and in the past he will spend WAY more than I would on a hotel. The nice thing is he just does it no stress no feeling of regret for not pre-planning just we need a room I got us a room move on!

So back to why I am up at night (along with all of the other women). I have to book tickets to Florida for a cruise that my parents are taking us on. Nice right! Right. If I don't DIE first trying to find an airline schedule that will work. I find plenty that look great until I realize we have to get a hotel the night before and possibly after, the times are perfect except the 6 a.m. depart when our cruise doesn't dock til 7 a.m. I know I know it is a good problem to have.

Daron and I don't really want to buy a house though sometimes I think it might be nice but then we don't have a down payment and if we decide to tighten the purse strings and save for one we can't visit family for a few years and that never seems to be an option. Either emotions, guilt, missing them, illness or an offer we can't refuse will come up. Sure folks can come here but not everyone can get off work or is in good enough health for the long ass trip out here! In addition I like to travel and would like to go to new places such as Oregon, Washington, Boston, California and Argentina. Our families live in Florida and Texas. Texas is one of my favorites and my in laws have a great home. Florida is hot. Really hot. But I love to visit my parents and they have a nice condo on the inter-coastal. But did I mention Washington, Oregon, Banff? I think the most stressful part is it is completely up to me. Daron doesn't care one way or the other. He loves his family and likes to visit but if it were up to him to make all the plans he would decide it's easier just not to go. This was just like my Dad and Mom. We wouldn't have traveled anywhere if it weren't for my Mom saying "ohh would you like to go to the Bahama's Brian we could take the girls..." I am sure he just looked up from his paper with his pipe in his mouth and said "uh huh." I am glad we went on that trip I was about six years old and it was awesome. I am also sure that he wasn't the one who spearheaded the drives to Florida to see his parents or the trips to St. Louis to visit my moms family. A few years ago when we were in Montana I asked Dad if he wanted to go to Glacier National Park he said "No I've seen mountains before." Fair enough! I do however remember my Dad doing the bills when I was a kid. I wondered why he was always grumpy after the fact. Now I know!

Then I worry about having enough money when Daron and I get older, will we have enough for health insurance, will there be health insurance? What if the stock market just goes completely away? Should I be putting cash in a fire proof lock box under my bed? I think I just have to stop worry about making the right decision because there isn't one!

Oh and I asked the kids to turn off the hose yesterday because they were filling puddles up after a short rain we had. What a waste I thought and I didn't want to add to our water budget. When I mentioned this Daron looked like me like I had two heads. Am I going overboard I thought? The kids are entertained and quiet. How much was that worth? Apparently it was worth a lot because I said to hell with it and let the water run. I told Addy to shut the refrigerator door "because we aren't cooling the whole house" yup just like my Dad used to say! I asked Daron to put the leftovers in a tupperware the other night. On occasion he has forgot and of course people would say I was "nagging" but it all falls back to the budget. If you waste food it throws my grocery budget off. In fact, any nagging women do it because men cannot plan ahead. I get home and think change the laundry so the clothes don't sour, empty the dishwasher, start dinner, clean up the toys, water the plants, get a drink of water, make sure Addy uses the restroom, feed that cat that keeps following me, turn the fish tank light off, write down the ten things I thought about in the car and oh ya I have to go to the bathroom. Men come home and think. Beer. Thank goodness they do because "hurricane Jen" as Daron calls me times two would be a nightmare!

My first priority is Addy so that makes most of the decisions easier. Whatever is in her best interest we do. I prefer not to work so Addy and I can go to the library, color, paint, and sew (All of which we did this afternoon) and I don't mind budgeting at all although the last four days before payday can be a bit tight. But do I stress about money like many folks in America - yes! Do I try not to - yes! Will I continue to? Yes, probably. Will I wonder why I often get headaches? No not anymore!

Mom made a Dress!
I found the cutest fabric at walmart of all places. I made Addy a little dress and Elmo a matching shirt. She can wear it now and we plan to take it on "the ship" as Addy says. Mimi and Grandpa Nagle are treating us to a cruise. Addy asked me if the ship had a roof yesterday. I told her yes, it even has rooms. I told her Mommy, Daddy, Aunt Sasa, Mimi, Papa and Addy will have three rooms that all connect to each other. Her eyes got wide and her smile came across her face. I told her she could run between all the rooms that she could sleep with Mommy and Daddy or Aunt Sasa or Mimi and Papa or Aunt Sasa, Mimi, Mommy and Addy can have a girls sleepover. She was over the moon with excitement.

Daron's Parents Grammy and Grandpa Visit and We Put Them to Work!

Poor David. He is going to stop asking what he can do since he spent three days installing new counter tops in our rental home as well as a new dishwasher and oven. Yes, I had to say farewell to the bungee cord that kept our front door of our old oven shut. Below is a mixture of photos from this summer. Wish we got more pictures of Grammy and Grandpa! I told David the fourth morning they were here that I didn't recognize him since I had only seen his butt for three days (because he was under the sink working working working). The other day Addy came into my room and said "Mom, nuffin happened." As it turns out Braxton and Addy had spilled some yogurt and cleaned it up as best they could.

Addy starts preschool on Sept. 8th, she is really looking forward to it but we have to start going to sleep early and getting up earlier. I told her we were in Preschool Boot Camp. We did good for about three days and both of us fell of the wagon or should I say slept in til 10 a.m. Yikes!!!! Since Addy is at the top of the alphabetical list we are the first ones to bring the snack. The pressure! I have to find something fairly healthy but still awesome and fun. I am after all setting the bar for snack time. I think I am going to do a "Gone Fishing" snack theme as seen in the photo below. The kids dip the pretzel into the cream cheese and then "catch" the fish. I had thought about fruit and cheese kabobs but I pictured kids getting stabbing each other with the skewers...

Pull My Finger

Last night when I was telling Addy stories before bed she was being very witty and silly. In fact, waggish seem to fit the bill perfectly - Waggish suggests the spirit of sly mischief and roguery of the constant joker, with no harm intended: a waggish good humor. For some reason she was pointing at me and giving a very mischievous laugh. I pulled her finger and said "Your papa used to say 'pull my finger and then he would toot' and she tooted as if on cue." That sent us both into a fit of giggles. So much that Daron had to come in to see what all the fuss was about.

It has been pretty hot here the past few weeks but the day we took the kids to the park it was maybe 80 and cloudy. We even had thunderstorms which was really really terrific. It was such a nice break from the sun. I cannot believe Addy will be starting preschool in a month. She is SO excited. We are practicing going to bed earlier and earlier so she can be up by 7:30 or 8 to make it to school. We don't really need to go back to school shopping but we are going to because I think it will be so much fun to get her new shoes and crayons and paper. She will like it too. I haven't wanted to drive to St. George Utah because it has been about 100 - 110 there. That would make for a miserable day of shopping. We have gone to Page, AZ where Lake Powell is and done some shopping. They don't have as many stores but it is in the 90's and Addy's best friend lives there. Basically Kanab has a Walmart 75 to 80 miles away in three directions. East, West and North. Just today I realized that going North to Cedar City would be a great mid summer option! Cedar City has a high of 88 today! Whooo Hooo. We rarely go to Cedar City because the roads can be bad in the winter however in the summer it is a beautiful drive into the mountains. Well, Addy is asking for me so I must go!

Weekend Project!
Daron and Addy spearheaded a project to spruce up the horribly depressing back porch on our rental house. Addy had a ball painting and though we are still in the process of figuring out what goes where I had to take a photo. Yesterday we had pesto sauce made with fresh basil leaves from the garden. I also made a homemade spaghetti sauce that included an eggplant from the garden. Unfortunately, it wasn't that good. Whoever made the recipe didn't add enough spices so I plan to teak it a little.

We are taking a family trip and not visiting family. It doesn't happen very often but Daron, Addy and I wanted a low key and close to home get away. In fact, Addy had been wanting to go to a "'otel & 'cation" (hotel and vacation) for quite awhile. Of course the second day she wanted to play with her friends and this morning she wanted to go home. After things started rolling again she adjusted just fine.The safari/animal sanctuary was by far the highlight. The downside was it was like 100 degrees and flipping HOT. Addy was a bit freaked out with feeding the giraffe and camel but as you can see I fed them from my mouth. Hey the tour guide suggested it and I had to try it. The camel had whiskers and the giraffe had a 16 inch tongue. Both animals had very accurate aim though so I didn't get slobbered on. Ok maybe a little by the giraffe but his tongue was rough like a cats and he had had eye surgery recently! The people in Sedona are friendly and the customer service is nice since there isn't any in Kanab! We went to two popular eateries (Oak Creek Brewery and Pub at Tlaquepaque and Picazzo's) and we were not impressed. That was a major bummer seeing as that we were looking for some good food. I must say the ambiance was nice at both restaurants and so was the beer ;) I of course had a headache the first night from driving and being at the Safari place all day so I didn't drink til day two when we went to the brewery. Then I ordered a beer that had the aftertaste of bananas and cloves. Yuck. Needless to say I turned it in for a much lighter non fruity beer.

Acrylics, Art & Chickens

Addyson saw a cartoon the other day where the animals were making foot prints and hand prints on canvas. Addy really REALLY wanted to do it so we went out to the art studio (which has been sitting pretty dormant for awhile) and Addy created her hand print and foot print art. Cayenne, Powder and Jamima kept clucking at the door so we let them in. Who knows maybe next week we will figure out a way to make chicken print art.

Auntie Karen Visit

Auntie Karen came for a twelve day visit and spend a lot of time with Miss Addyson. Mommy had a neurologist appt in St. George and though it took 20 minutes to see the Dr. it was a three hour round trip! She also watched Addy while I went to work for a few hours. Needless to say Addy and Karen had a good time together and Mommy knew she was in good hands! My friend Kim came with Karen and I to Bryce and Karen took Zeena B on an outing to Duck Creek (which is only an hour and a half away but their snow was just melting!) Since Karen is just recovering from knee surgery she wasn't able to golf with Daron - maybe next time! Karen volunteered with the cats at Best Friends and agreed to take a cat back to with her to Boston. A family had just adopted the cat and needed someone to fly with him across the country. Karen picked up the cat at 7:30 a.m. from Best Friends and flew from Page, AZ to Denver, CO had a layover 4 hrs ish and then Denver to Boston where she arrived a little after midnight! Luckily the cat and Karen made it home safe!

A Dirty Shirt

Addyson regularly doesn't want to change into her pajamas. Since there isn't a whole lot of difference between her pajamas and her regular clothes I started dressing her in regular clothes after her bath then when she got up in the morning she essentially was wearing a new clean outfit. This morning Addy woke up in her blue (t shirt material) dress that had a spot or two from a fudgsicle that she and Auntie Karen had shared the night before. No biggie. We went on with our morning which included blue juice, cheesy crackers, watering the garden, bugs, blue nail polish, more bugs and painting flower pots in the art studio. Just before lunch Addy's dress was wearing a bit of blue juice, cheesy crackers, water, dirt, blue nail polish and blue paint. Addy had painted her toes and finger nails all by herself of course.

Addy wanted to swing with Auntie Karen in the hammock but we told her she had to change out of her dirty shirt first (we are so demanding!). You can only imagine what ensued. Crying. Crying. More crying and an "I don't want to change my shirt." More crying and an "I don't want to change my shirt." More crying and an "I don't want to change my shirt." Auntie Karen trying to reason with her. Mommy trying to reason with her. Karen going to her room. Mommy going to her room. Addy yelling from the living room "I don't want to change my shirt. I want to swing in the hammock now." Eventually Addy said "Mommy (sniffle sniffle) I want you" in which I got up went to the living room scooped her up and took her in her room. I set her down and said "Oh my goodness your shirt is so dirty I think that there are little bugs living in there." Smile. Yup, I got a smile out of her. I then pretended that my hand was a bug and said "Addy I am a rolly polly bug and your shirt is so dirty I love it."
Addy: Giggle.
Rolly Polly bug: "Oh Addy your shirt is too dirty it is making me sneeze. A choo."
Addy sneezed. I kid you not! It was priceless.
Rolly Polly bug: "You see what I mean Addy even YOU are sneezing!"
Addy: Giggle.
Rolly Polly bug: "I must find a new place to live. Maybe I will go back to the garden."
Mommy: "Wow your shirt must be dirty if he is going back to the garden!"
Rolly Polly bug: "Oh wait I want to live in this nice clean shirt." (the hand bug scurries to the clean green shirt I had been trying to get her to wear.)
Addy: "No you can't live there this is my shirt."
Mommy: "Addy you aren't going to wear it so let the rolly polly bug have it."
Addy: "No Mommy I am going to wear it."
Mommy imagines herself doing the happy dance and yelling "there you have it folks she is going to wear it!"
Rolly Polly bug: "No I want to wear it."
Addy: "No, you can't have it."
Addy and Rolly Polly bug wrestle and tickle and wrestle and tickle. Eventually Rolly Polly bug is scared of Addy's blue toes and blue fingers which Addy informs us are aliens (brothers and sisters to be exact).

I wish I could remember her comments better but I don't. I do however know that she took off her dirty shirt dress and put on a clean tank top.

Today as we were leaving the swimming pool she said "Mommy say 'Addy I'm so happy you had so much fun at the pool today?'".

Daron just carried her on his back into the bedroom where I am typing this- here's how the conversation went:
Daron: "I have this weird lump on my back"
Addy just giggled.
Mommy: "That's a pretty cute lump on your back."
Daron: "It's a very wiggly lump."
Addy: "This is fun."
Daddy: "I am going to go in Addy's room."
Mommy: "Take the lump with you."
Addy: "Mommy say "It's a cute lump though."
Mommy: "Yes, it is a cute lump."
Addy: "Daddy take me into the kitchen."
Daddy: "The lump is kinda bossy."
Addy: "Actually the lump is kinda hungry."

Look Who's Talking

So the past couple of months Addy has been telling us what to say. It all started because ever since Addy was little Daron and I would make voices for all of her toys. For example, Mr. Zebra has worked swimmingly for getting Addy to put on clean clothes when Mom cannot.

Mommy: "Addy lets put this cute new outfit on."
Addy: "No I don't want to."
Mommy: "Addy it will look so nice."
Addy: "I doooooon't waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaant tooooooooooooo."
Mommy walks to kitchen.
Mr. Zebra: "That is an awesome outfit I bet Addy would like to wear that."
Mommy: "No Mr. Zebra Addy said she didn't want to wear it."
Mr. Zebra: "I wish I could wear that cute outfit."
Mommy: "I know me to Mr. Zebra you would look so nice..." and then we are interrupted by the pitter patter of feet.
Addy: "I want to wear it."
Mommy: "Are you sure? I can hang it back up." (start to walk towards her bedroom)
Addy: "NO I want to wear it."
Addy puts on the outfit.
Addy: "Look at my new outfit Mr. Zebra."
Mr. Zebra: "Ohhhh you look so cute Addy."
Mom does the happy dance and all is great until I have to talk her into the next task at hand.

Daron and I have been horse from doing so many damn voices. In fact, Daron is so good at it that he has different voices for each one. All of my voices sound the same. Daron does a mob boss voice for the aardvark "Hey kid what'r you doing over dare?" "Hey kid, you seen any ants around here?" and my personal favorite the praying mantis with the Indian accent (from India not Native American). "I am in the sinking that dis bath is bedy good for me to be washing my little feeties in, no?"

Now when we are hanging out and she has a stuffed or plastic animal she will say "Mommy make Mr. Zebra talk." or "Daddy make Daddy Lion talk." One day she was crying ALL the way from the house to the park. It is 15 minute walk so it made for a long, long walk. I can't remember why she was crying but I am sure it is because she was playing with the neighbor and we had a play date at the park etc. It was a bit unnerving when seeing the park didn't make her stop crying. With no toy animals in site I busted out the following -
Mommy: "Hi Mr. Park sorry that Addy is crying but she doesn't want to play with you today."
Mr. Park. "Oh I am sorry to hear that I had saved her a spot on the swing."
Mommy: "Mr. Park that was so nice of you but I don't think she wants to swing."
Addy: "I WANT to swing."
Mommy: "Oh Mr. Park I guess Addy wants to swing today."
It went on and on and Mr. Wind was blowing like crazy so he had to talk and then Addy asked me "Mom is Mr. Wind friends with Mr. Park?" of course I said yes. When we left the park an hour or two later Addy asked "Is Mr. Sun friends with Mr. Park and Mr. Wind?" I am afraid this all might backfire when school starts. It is doubtful that her parents have a Mr. Zebra en all vocabulary.
This is D, we also have little smoke (from the backyard fire pit) who talks to Addy and tells her he's going up in the sky to make more clouds. He then tells her that he's getting together with his little wood friends that Addy and I have gathered to make Mr. fire. Once Mr. fire shows up he teaches all of the sassy little fox-tails a lesson for getting in Zeena's fur. Addy finds only the most sassy foxtails for me to throw in the fire.

The other day Addy went to the office with me. When you work at Best Friends Animal Society work can be pretty fun for a three year old. Addy took photos the whole way up to work and while we were there. It was awesome to see the world from her perspective. I did not alter any of the photos at all.

My little Humming Bird! Addy loves to help me make humming bird juice and picks a different color each time to see which one the little guys like the best. The other day she decided to be a little bird and test the juice, but she wanted me to scare her away like the humming birds do when we make a noise. LOVE this kid! D

Addy saw an old photo of Daron and I and asked Dad "Where was I?" Daddy told her she wasn't born yet. She said "No Where WAS I?" So Daddy said you were still in Heaven. "Oh I was with the dead dogs." Addy replied.

Yesterday Addy and I were at the park. There were a ton of kids there and a lot of distracted parents. I pushed Addy on the swing and played one of our favorite games. I push her high and then stand in front of her at just the right distance so her feet hit me. I say "I am just standing her minding my own business looking at the birds" and then WHACK Addy kicks me and I pretend to stumble and fall and yelp. She laughs SO hard that I can't help but laugh to the point of tears. Then I say "What the heck? A big bird just flew by and knocked me in the head." Well while we were doing this we got quite an audience and Addy was thrilled that all the kids were watching and laughing too. After 30 minutes I told her she needed to give another kid a chance to swing on the kiddie swing and we went to the slide. There were a bunch of boys throwing rubber at each other. Where were the parents? The playground is covered with rubber pieces from a local stamping company. Addy wanted to pretend she was driving the boat - they have a steering wheel on top of one of the jungle gym. A little boy saw Addy going for the steering wheel and ran to it and said "No, I am steering it." I threw him off the play set - no kidding that was just my mommy fantasy. I ACTUALLY said "Oh I thought you were going to go down the slide and protect the ship from sharks. We needed someone with big muscles to take on the sharks." The kid looked at me like I was from outerspace and then said "No I have a knife." (He was pretending he had a fake knife on his hip) If I was still in Houston I might have had to pat him down to make sure. So the kid left and slayed the sharks periodically coming back for more encouraging words and a handful of "fish." Where were the parents? In the meantime this little girl about 3 or 4 hurt her bottom on the slide (not bad but where were her parents). This was Daron and my conversation later that night.

Jen: "Addy and I had fun at the park today but where are all the parents (then told him about our games)"
Daron: "Addy and I play that game too. I don't know how the parents can't watch their kids closer"
Jen: "Is it our age"
Daron: "I don't know. You don't think we are smothering her?"
Jen: "I was the only adult on the jungle gym today......"

Mimi and Papa from Florida sent Addy a cute little hat from their cruise. Addy loved it but DID NOT want me to take a photo of her.

Daddy turns 38! Addy made a chocolate cake for Daddy and really wanted to decorate it with balls. Footballs, golf balls, basketballs etc. Mommy however wasn't on the ball enough to get that done (no pun intended!) Addy put three candles in the cake representing that Dad was still in his thirties ( unlike her old mom).

"I have Braxton"

Yesterday Addy made a new friend. Her name is Cedar and she is turning four next month. We met her and her Mom at the library and they invited us over to their house. On the way over Addy kept asking "What was her name Mom?" and I would say "Cedar" and she would say "I am so excited to go to Cedars house!". We literally had this same conversation at least 6 times. It was pretty cute.

Cedar asked Addy if she had any brothers or sisters {Cedar has two older brothers}. Addy said "I have Braxton". Braxton is Addy's neighbor friend. He is 5 and can come over all the time and they play like brother and sister. The benefit for me is I can send him home when they start to bicker.

Addy had her first "Satan" episode in front of Daddy the other night. In her defense I let her have too much sugar and didn't make her eat enough good food. It was her Dad's birthday so we had cake and ice cream and then during the bath the meltdown began. Ironically, I had just mentioned to Daron that most of my friends had started a time out for their little ones. His response was "I can't see why we would ever have to give Addy a time out" and then something about her being perfect ;) Not that I blame him. Most of the time he can turn a grumpy situation into a funny situation. He has an amazing knack for getting her to do what we need her to do. He also makes voices and persona's for all of her plastic animals - the anteater for example calls her "kid" and talks like a mobster. But I digress.
Somehow she got stuck on "I want bubbles" as we pulled her out of her bubble bath after she had been in there an hour, the water cold and her skin pruned up. 45 minutes of yelling "I want bubbles" while crying, pulling Daddy by his shirt to the bathroom, making Mommy look at her as I tried to ignore her. We tried every trick in our book and nothing worked. She didn't even know what she wanted or how to calm herself down. When I felt myself losing my temper Daron took over and vice versa. I don't think either one of us would have been surprised if her head spun all the way around and smoke came out of her ears. Finally Daron and I were exhausted and defeated and we just flopped down in our bed. She crawled up on the bed still crying, still saying "I want bubbles" and kicking or hitting to get our attention. We ignored and protected our vulnerable parts :) Eventually, she tired herself out and Daron started reading a kids book. We acted like we didn't want her to read with us so of course she wanted to read with us. A few little whimpers throughout the book but it worked. Daron left Addy and I to fall asleep and I am sure he went outside and smoked a pack of cigarettes.

The next morning Addy and I were sitting in the living room and out of the blue she said "I want bubbles" I froze. I think I have post traumatic stress syndrome...

Kirsten and I hiked the 8 mile round trip to Observation Point in Zion National Park. It took two and a half hours to hike up there and two hours to come down. The first thirty minutes about killed me - it is a 1.5 mile ascend and I thought I would die. After that it was all good.

Texas Grandma and Grandpa spent a fun filled week with us here in Kanab. Addy was over the moon with all the attention. Paula and I were able to sneak away for a girls shopping spree and David and Daron remodeled the laundry room. David did many projects around the house to make our daily tasks a little easier and efficient.

Paula brought Easter egg magnets to paint and they kept each other entertained by playing with animals from Daron's childhood and new animal toys that Addy tricked Paula into getting for her! Daddy horse needed a baby horse and baby pig needed a mama pig...

Addy and Mommies Art Barn Project -
Well the weather is finally really really nice high 70's but our allergies are killing us! Go Figure! So we decided to work on an art project inside. Addy is starting the grass for her Art Barn Project. She is a great painter and like her Mom once she starts she doesn't want to stop. Addy checked on the foam animals throughout the day and put them to bed in the barn before bed.

Addy starts painting the grass. I think she needs a bigger brush!

Addy and Mommy add a pond, barn and more grass.

Addy picks out the foam colors and tells Mom what animals to make. Addy also attaches the velcro on the animals and the wall.


Addy puts the sheep near the haystack and makes sure everyone gets a drink from the pond.

Mommy couldn't be a control freak when painting because it was Addy's project afterall.

congratulations Lisa! Lisa my amazing sister, fabulous sister in law and super aunt was awarded not one but two awards by the LPD. Yea she rocks! Uncle Dan and our parents flew in from Florida to celebrate! I wish Addy, Daron and I could have made it. Congrats again to the best person I know for your Medal of Valor and Exceptional Merit. Our dog Zeena ate Mr. Zebra and Mr. Giraffes ears off. Luckily they were okay but Daddy made and appointment at the clinic just in case. Dr. Mike and Dr. Patti (from DogTown) worked on Mr. Zebra and Giraffe and reconstructed their ears. After hours of intense surgery we are happy to say that Mr. Zebra and Giraffe are recovering wonderfully. Addy was a little taken aback when we picked up the two at the clinic. Some of the staff thought we were nuts but played along!

It is the day before the big 3. Addy is turning 3 and I cannot believe it. Addy and Daddy cleaned up the backyard, made a compost area and stacked wood. Lucky me got to clean inside. It was fine since it was 70 and sunny during the week now it is cold, cloudy and overcast. However I missed a falcon attacking a dove mid-flight. Daron gave me the blow by blow and the dove got away. Actually I am glad I missed it. I love nature but sometimes it can be a bit much!

Auntie Karen sent Addyson 28 ducks. All different ducks. Rock star ducks, hippie ducks, cat ducks, dog ducks, pig ducks, alien ducks, gnome ducks, horse duck, chicken duck, zoo keeper ducks, clown duck, astronaut duck - well you get the idea! She loves them and we had to take some to the grocery store to ride on the merry go round and see all the food for sale. The duckies got very dizzy on the merry go round and got sick. Addy thought that was hilarious. They all played outside in the grass and met Mr. Zebra. Mr. Zebra informed them about bath time and bath time rules. Mr. Zebra is in charge of them. Mr. Zebra as Addy put it "didn't want them to get crazy."

Addy and I went to visit Daddy at his office which happens to back up to the pig and horse area. We decided to visit some of the piggies which are all up for adoption - hint hint. They are really great. They can be house trained and they poop in one area - unlike our dog Zeena who seems to crap wherever she wants. Pigs are smarter than dogs too. They can learn tricks, have personalities and can be quiet stubborn which is where the term pig headed came from. The only bad thing is not every neighborhood is zoned for pot bellied pigs.

Daron and I love listening to Addy when she is playing with her toy animals. She mimics like all kids the things she hears at home. The other day she asked Daddy to watch Mr. Zebra because she was "going to work" and told Mr. Zebra she "will be back." Then she went to the kitchen and asked "Is Mr. Zebra ok? I will be back."
When she came back from work she hugged Mr. Zebra and said "I told you I will always come back. Did you have fun with your friends?"

Months ago she would tell her animals that Mommy is going to the gym and they would stay with Daddy. Recently she was playing with the animals and said "Daddy's gonna get so mad he'll walk away." That made Daron smile.

One of Addy's little friends has a broken home to put it lightly and once he came over and said "I can't believe you Addy, you ruined my life, you ruined my life!" This happened all because Addy wouldn't play monsters with him. Of course he had heard it that weekend.
